Greg, start with these steps that are listed by Apple right here and here. Let us know if any of this is working (or not). Make sure that your dock connector is clean, that the pins are not bend, broken or corroded.

The iPhone I am working on has had the dock replace and the battery. The battery was replaced because it would not hold a charge, then when I connected to my computer I would receive the follow error message "one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it”. I then replaced the dock and I am still receiving the same message. The 3 other iPhones I have connect to the computer with no problems, so I know it is not the computer. I am leaning toward the system board being bad, but I am not sure if this is true or not. Any help would be appreciated.
