On an HP (most models going back quite a while), it's usually F5, F9, or F11: press the Function key and one of those. If the function buttons have icons on them, look for something resembling a flat line with a sort of starburst pattern coming off it.

@joellawi your computer is a HP 15-dw0037wm? Has that keyboard backlight ever worked for you?

Upload your keyboard photo, and we'll try to find the key for you. If it's there. Most laptops don't have backlit keyboards.
