@modulandi why do you think it is the Audio IC? What have you checked? What exact model is your motherboard? Usually you'll find a couple numbers printed on the top side of the board. The most common audio codec for your model is a REA_ALC3292 and it is soldered on the top side of your motherboard.

btw you can try this.
download and run HPIA
https://ftp.ext.hp.com/pub/caps-softpaq/...
Click on Analyze
Allow for some time for the system to complete the discovery.
click on recommendations tab when discovery is complete.
check on the the items that is recommended to install. especially on audio drivers.
click download.
select on the radio button, download softpack, extract files and install.
once done, your pc will need to restart to update bios and misc.
