How to remove a dent on the LCD case?

I have 2 MB Airs here that have some dent at the top corner of the display case & I want to straighten it out without having to remove the LCD as that is a no-go... I thought about using a small coin and bash it out with a hammer as the coins round edge would fit to the curve on the casing.... but there maybe a more gentle way, any suggestions? The dents are similar but not as bad as the one in the picture.

If you can figure out how to get the yoke out of an Egg without breaking the shell you have the magic touch!

Sadly, fixing dented cases is no different. You will need to remove the LCD just so you can get the needed angle to hammer with a small dolly to reshape the metal.

This is no different than what a body shop does to bang out a dented fender. Give this a view How To Use a Hammer & Dolly to Smooth DENTS in Sheet Metal!! iFixit had some tools just for the task but I don’t see them listed any more.

Yeah I know the LCD needs to come out to get it right but they are as you know stuck down and we only remove them when they are already done for.....

@danj To remove the LCD is no easy task as they are not only very thin and fragile nut also stuck down right? A heat gun to loosen any double sided tape risks damaging the 3 sheets behind also, so it looks like to much of a risk to attempt it, dent looks ugly and makes the unit 1/3 in value..... I am looking into a small vice and make some kind of fixture that can hold the case in position leaving the corner part exposed and then with another small vice (& a small coin) using the fixture for leverage to see if I can push it out..... no mean task and one for the pipeline as this way maybe possible just removing the bezel and without removing the LCD.... studying an empty top case I have it might just be able to do it enough to make it look better..... I have 2 units here that need this repair :(

@livfe - I never said it would be easy! That was the premise of my first statement getting the Yoke out of the egg shell without breaking it.

Apple and other hardware makers don’t build devices for repairability it’s that simple! They build with the least amount of fasteners, with lots of glue or welding. While we can come up with tools and ways to over come some of these, the skills with the right tools as well as the patience of the person trying to effect a repair then gets into the equation. If you are not doing it your self then there is the cost of the other persons time also plays a part.

There was a point in time people would collect things to admire. As an example when I was a kid I collected stamps and as I traveled I would often collect stamps from these countries. Some are very ornate or reflected on an important issue or person. This year the Xmas stamps are not very appealing here in the states. Even some friends I have in Europe where telling me theirs weren’t much better. Email has just about killed the holiday card industry and the traditional posting of holiday cheer! And sadly stamp collecting too!

I do commend your efforts resurrecting older systems to be used. And I too feel your frustrations on such a simple task that it’s so bloody hard needlessly by the hardware design.

The best you can do here is take a file to the corner reshape it so at least it is not jagged and allows the lid to fully seat down. Or if you can find a good working display assembly just swap it over.

@danj Stamps LOL I collected them when I was 4 or 5, moved quickly onto vinyl records for the next 30 years...... but anyways, a file wouldn't hep at all as the can only make the dent more inwards or even roughen the surface.... pointless to swap a good top case over from another good unit LOL.... I will pdate on this with some pictures as and when ;)

@livfe - I gave the stamps to my girlfriends niece a few years ago and she enjoys seeing the world thru them as she can’t travel.
