My ipod screen was already cracked but the screen still worked but then it cracked again and the screen now is unresponsive. I have checked and the creen underneath is completly fine so I don't know why it has stopped working now.

Sounds to me like the last damage on the screen broke the digitizer circuit. If your LCD is still okay replace the digitizer, the part is available right here and the guide is here. Not an easy fix, but doable ;-) Hope this helps, good luck.
