Apple's 2016 revision to their laptop lineup targeted at professional users. Features a 15-inch, 2880-by-1800 Retina display, quad-core Intel Core i7, 256 GB / 512 GB /1 TB / 2TB storage options, 16 GB RAM, and a keyboard equipped with a Touch Bar. Released November 2016. Features Model A1707.

Screen won't turn on unless 2nd monitor plugged in after replacement

I followed the instructions to replace the cracked screen on my A1707, but now when the laptop boots or wakes the screen and Touch Bar is blank. If I plug in an external monitor to the usb-c port I can log in and halfway through logging in the laptop screen and Touch Bar start. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Along the face of the screen are two hidden magnets which interface with Hall sensors on the logic board as marked here.

Using a steel paper clip slide it along the displays bezel about halfway on the sides. Do you feel the magnet tug? Compare to your old display assembly.

So either one or both of the magnets are missing or one of the Hall sensors is messed up. Did you take the logic board out by chance?

On both the old monitor and new can feel magnets about two inches from the bottom of the screen.

I did not remove the logic board. Additional issues with the new screen that may be related are that there is no camera detected, I can no longer turn the screen brightness down, and the keyboard backlight can't be turned on :(

Also, when booting without the external monitor plugged in it is blank, but if I type my password and hit enter it will eventually load the login screen. However, if I close the laptop and then reopen the touchbar comes on but not the screen.

@stuvx - At this point I’m thinking you got a bad display assembly. One of the issues this series had was you couldn’t use a virgin display as you don’t have access to the tools to program the camera. You need a used display as it will have been programmed with the needed micro code.

Time to return the display to at least get your money back and locate a better parts source. Where do you live maybe we can aim you to someone, what country and nearest large city?

Thanks Dan, how much would that cost? I'm in Nanaimo, BC, Canada.

@stuvx - All I can do is aim you to a seller which will supply a better part. Here’s one 2016/17 display assembly

OK - thanks, I will try and get a refund on the previous screen. I'm considering reinstalling the old cracked screen and getting a new mac mini for development instead!
