The red X is most commonly caused by a non-functioning hard drive. I would use and USB-to-Zif adapter first to see if you can access the drive with that. This would eliminate any other issue with the iPod. After that replace the hard drive and hard drive cable. You will find all the instructions right here. Hope this helps, good luck.
