Repair guides, disassembly, and troubleshooting information for AirPods Max wireless noise-cancelling headphones, updated with new colors and USB-C charging in September 2024.

Is wired audio possible?

Hi iFixit team,

A lot of users of the USB-C AirPods Max, myself included, have been surprised to find out that currently there is no support for wired connectivity with this model. Apple offered wired connectivity for the Lightning version through an Apple exclusive cable, but as of yet there is no such offering for the USB-C version. This has been confirmed with Apple Support.

My question is, can you tell if the USB-C port is capable of transferring audio or connected only to the battery, as some are speculating?

It would be helpful to know if this would ever be possible through software update/new cable, or if Apple has completely removed the possibility of wired audio connection for the new version.

Thanks!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Hello 👋🏼

I saw your question and thought I would give an update on this. You can do this now with USB C and another cable that is a c to 3.5.

Thank you! There's hope. I updated the AirPods Max firmware to the listed version to try this out. I tried a couple usb-c to 3.5mm cables I have, and neither worked. Really hoping I don't have to buy the 1st party $39 cable to get this feature.

The previous generation of Airpods Max could function in 'wired mode' with the aforementioned MFA Apple cable. As far as my understanding goes, there is no technical reason for this not to be acvhived with usb-c -> lightning.

The same applies here I suspect. There should be no reason why it cannot be done, it just depends on whether apple want to or not :/

My only regret regarding buying the airpods max (previous gen) is the fact that wired mode is essentially useless due to the requirement on an expensive (and incredibly fragile) cable.

Note to Apple: I have an Apple laptop, with an Apple usb c cable and Apple headphones. Make it work, you are being unreasonable. Grow up.
