after the latest update 17.6.1 my face id stoped working. When I try to reset it I get as far as placing my face within the camera frame but there is no response from the phone and I am unable to proceed further. What can I do?

Whilst there are many reasons Face ID can stop working, one of them has consistently been after updates.
“How to geek” website describes doing a Hard Reset on your iPhone that may resolve the issue.
The steps are simple and easy to follow, if there has been no other changes to your device before or after update including “drops or screen changes”, then you may have some success with the phone reset.
You can also web search for hard reset for your device to learn more or see other options.
