Older models (Pre-XX50) have a WiFi whitelist, so wireless card replacement is not as easy as buying a bulk generic card online.
What is the full model number of the laptop as shown on the product information label on the bottom of the laptop.
When you say that the screen is OK presumably you mean that it is not physically broken and that the laptop turns on i.e. fan turns on, startup sound heard etc?
Try connecting an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop and check if it shows the display from the laptop OK
