Why does my lawn mower stop driving while mowing?

I have a craftsman lt2500. I start mowing the lawn does fine . Then all of a sudden it slows down to a stop. I have to disengage the blade what a few minutes then put it in reverse then foreward multiple times before it will go . I then re engage the blade and it goes a few feet before doing the same thing .

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this one of those continiously variable speed transmissions?

Not the single-speed-at-a-time shifters.

Then it could be fluid loss at the transaxle.

(Just like transmission fluid)

I've never had to add fluid to mine, but I'll look tomorrow.

If it's not that kind of transmission, then the problem would be a lot simpler.

Drive belt is old/loose, along with possibly old/missing idler pulley spring.
