Mac slows drastically after battery change

I just changed the battery on my Mac following this guide. After I changed the battery, I somehow tore the Retina display cable. I replaced that as soon as possible, and then calibrated the battery. Now that the Mac is up and running again, it is so slow! Even after wiping the drive and reinstalling a copy of macOS from Internet Recovery, the Mac is so slow. I feel like the Mac may be rejecting the new battery by lowing its performance. Is this a common issue with batteries that are not by Apple?

@danj - I will... but I can't right now. Unfortunately I am away from my Mac at the moment. In about a week or so I will get it back.

Hey everyone. Sorry for the delayed response. I still haven't gotten back to my Mac. But, it looks like next Saturday I should have an answer. Thanks for your patience!

Hi Jadon,

It's a known behaviour that MacBooks throttle when the battery is removed or it doesn't recognize the battery (see this Apple doc dating back to 2008). However, considering that you calibrated the battery, it looks like the MacBook recognizes the battery. The first thing you should probably try is resetting the SMC.

Hey there! Thanks for the insight! I can’t remember if I reset the SMC or not… so I will definitely check into that. Like I said, though, I am out of town at the moment and away from my Mac. In a week or so I will be back. But thanks for the suggestions!

Hi Jadon,

I would advise you do this seeing as your battery condition is good.

@arandomhitman - Okay, I just did the SMC reset, and that changed the speed drastically. I am shocked. I usually always reset the NVRAM and SMC after any change I do to a Mac… I guess I completely forgot this time. Anyway… I’ll keep using it for a while… but as far as I can tell, that fixed the problem. Thanks for you help!

no problem, glad it worked.

Hi Jadon,

Due to the nature of Apple, I wouldn't put it past them to do such a thing.

However, would you mind installing coconut battery on your device and sending a screenshot of all the statistics shown?
