Why does the fan not kick on?

My Xbox will turn on and run games like normal, until it starts having to do more intensive work, then it'll flash a message on screen saying it will turn off due to overheating and then it will flash a single red dot for a few minutes.

I might have it narrowed down to 2 things:

  1. "Not enough power" Some people say that the fan not spinning up might be because of the power supply. That could be the issue, mine is very old and shares an outlet extender with 2 tv's (flatscreen and CRT) and another console.
  2. "broken fan" I did take apart my console a few months ago to see why it would run so incredibly hot and sign me out of live. I made especial care not to potentially damage the fan or any cooling component, but accidents do happen.
Answer this question I have this problem too

Hi Arthur!

Option 1 is unlikely (but possible, most of the times the power supply will go in error at the moment).

I would go for option 2 first. Best thing to do is, to replace the fan when you are in there (just to make sure). And also replace the thermal paste. When you did that, and it's running fine then you are good to go. Otherwise you could try to replace the power supply.

@dan0 I took it apart again, and it works fine now. I think what happened was, at some point, I accidentally pulled the fan just enough to unplug it. I went underneath the hard drive cradle to push it back down. I also removed the foam around the fan since it was mostly deteriorated by that point, and what was left was falling away and into the fan. It's probably not the best thing to do, but like I said, the foam was pretty much gone.

Aside from those 2 things, I have no idea how I got the fan spinning again.

Hi Arthur! Then probably the fan wasn’t fully connected.. good to hear that everything is working fine again! When the foam is deteriorated, please remove it as it doesn’t have any function no more. Thanks for the update!
