New and old laptop screen not displaying anything

Hi all, recently the screen on my 2021 g15 broke

Block Image

and it just got worse and worse until the crack got so bad it was unusable and I think this is noteworthy, the screen often required a bit of bending in some direction to display anything at all (like in this picture).

Otherwise pitch black. So, I ordered a new screen which I installed today and it is basically doing the same thing (not displaying anything).

Cable is properly connected, the pc is alive, so I have no idea, the new screen does not seem defective. I don't want to bend it to try to make it work like the old one as it's brand new for it to display anything like the old display. And yes the old display doesn't show anything either even when I bend it around now. What could it be ?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @thisismurica

Try connecting an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop's HDMI port and check if you get the laptop's display showing on it. Don't forget to press the Fn + F9 keys (both together) to toggle the laptop's display output between the laptop screen only, the external monitor screen only or both on together.

If you do see a display on the external monitor, try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the laptop's screen and check if you can see any images at all. Don't forget to switch the display output back to the laptop screen.

They will be very faint if they are there so trying this in a darkened room may help to see them.

If you can see images on the laptop screen then there's a backlight problem with the screen. This could be a faulty backlight power supply on the motherboard (blown fuse or power mosfet?) or a faulty video cable.

Further testing of the motherboard, using the schematics for the board, would be required to find out what's wrong. I couldn't find a free download online for the schematics but I did find this website that appears to have them but you have to join to be able to download them.

If you can't see any images on the laptop screen, as you have already tried replacing the screen, then it could be a faulty video cable.

If you don't see a display on the external monitor, the there's a problem on the motherboard and further testing would be required to find out what's wrong.

Hopefully you turned off the laptop and disconnected the battery from the motherboard before unplugging and plugging in the screen. Plugging the video cable back in again if the laptop was on or even if it were off and the battery wasn't disconnected, could've damaged the video circuit i.e. blown a fuse on the motherboard if there is one or perhaps even a power mosfet that supplies the backlight power if there isn't a fuse.

Thanks for the reply, when I plug it in to an external monitor, the laptop functions correctly. When replacing the screen the laptop was off but the battery wasn't disconnected. I'm leaning more towards that blown fuse or something with the video cable. It's very odd.

@thisismurica

Can you see any images on the laptop screen when shining a flashlight at an angle close to the screen, you didn't say?

Knowing if you can or can't will affect what you have to check next as a fuse might not be the problem if you can't see any images at all.

Hey thanks again for the reply, I have tried to shine a flashlight and I see absolutely nothing. I have an old zephyrus g14 lying around with another broken screen. They are similar models so they have the same display connectors. I decided to swap the screens and see. Plugging my new screen on the old G14, still the same issue. But the interesting part js when plugging the broken g14 screen on my g15, I heard the Asus boot sound which I only heard when plugged hdmi into a tv (so with a working screen). That leads me to believe the pc does in fact detect the screen so one connection being bad is more likely out. So in the end, I believe my new screen is dead.
