MacBook Pro Retina 15" 2015 screen flickering

Hi, in a Macbook Pro Retina 15" 2015 with DG, Catalina, the screen is flickering slowly in constant intervals. No damage or fall. Resetting NVRAM/PRAM didn't fix it. No difference when bending or pressing the display or the bottom case. No faults in hardware diagnostic testing. The only issue is that the battery is swollen and the indication of "needs repair" for the battery is on (will be replaced in the following days). Upon inside inspection, everything looks ok, display cable too.

When you move the mouse, the mouse freezes until the flickering is stopped and then freezes again in its interval. Sometimes the flickering stops but still you can see like the pixels have been "bigger" (not a smooth screen). Also, the external monitor works great.

Can you help please with what it may be? Is there any way to exclude the case of a fault display?

Chosen Solution

Sadly, if the mouse pointer is freezing that aims us to the GPU logic not the display which would be the other possibility. I would plug in an external display, keyboard and mouse to see if running in Clam Shell Mode worked (lid closed) if that too failed that’s the main logic boards GPU logic which needs work.

Hi Dan, first thank you so much for replying. To be honest I hope to be replying :-) I respect your experience (I read your profile).

I tried what you suggested and everything works great in the external display in Clamshell mode. I am posting here the 1st video + a new one.

I am waiting for your thoughts :-)

@gmich - your first image shows a display issue where the LCD panel has damage where the T-CON connects to the panel which you can see in this image in Step 9 in this display teardown MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown it can be within the ribbon cables, T-CON board which is dangling in the image or within the LCD panel it’s self.

What can happen is the connections can sometimes fuse back when you twist or alter the displays angle. Which is why it might show its working sometimes. Think how a loose ceiling lights light bulb reacts when someone is bouncing up and down just above when it’s a little loose.

Sadly, you’ll need a new display to fix this. Now the other shoe falls, the demand for this series system is still quite high and the available displays on the used market (only source) is still a sellers market! As such these displays go for a high price as an example even iFixit when they get them is high MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mid 2015) Display Assembly.

I personally have two and I would be hard pressed to give them up!

Hi Dan,

thank you for your reply. The weird thing is that it stops doing that just itself without me doing something. Also, if I bend it or apply pressure there, it doesn't make any difference.

I know that they are too expensive and that is the reason why I wanted first to eliminate anything else. My Macbook is amazing and I don't want to change it for a newer one (plus I don't have money for a newer one). So, I was thinking that the best solution is to buy an identical MacBook to get the display and keep the rest for parts, it will cost me less or the same as buying just a display assembly.

@gmich - Make sure you get the same model year as the older displays are not compatible!

I will do it thanks. Basically, I was thinking of getting a 2.8GHz instead of 2.5GHz (mine), do displays are interchangeable between these two?
