LG Velvet charging but battery percentage not increasing

I recently got an LG Velvet from my customer for free since he upgraded his phone, I have no idea why when I plug in a wire, it shows that the phone is charging but the battery percentage keeps dropping. Same issue with wireless charging.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

@ofheartsking this can be caused by a bad battery. It may be report that it is charging but it can no longer hold a charge. Replace the battery then re-evaluate. The battery replacement on this is a PITA but it is possible. Since iFixit does not yet have a guide for it, check videos like this and this one as well as some pictures on here It is not directly about the battery but it will definitely get you there.

There are of course other reason that can be the cause but those are all board level repairs.

While you work on your phone, take lots of pictures. Once you are done with it, take those pictures and create a guide for iFixit. That will help the next person that has a device with the same issues as you do. It's easy and fun to create these guides. https://ifixit.com/Guide/new The iFixit community will appreciate this.

Thanks for the reply but I have tested 2 "new" batteries so far. I say "new" because I don't really know if they're actually new, but both have the same issue. I'm guessing the board is dead then since I cannot see any visible damage on the board which includes liquid damage. But then again I am just starting on my repair services and do not have much experience or equipment to detect the problems. But for now I think I will return both the batteries back to my supplier and ask for new ones. Side note, could it be that LG requires the battery controller from the old battery to properly calibrate the new one?

@ofheartsking I see, well we did not know that you had already tried new batteries. No, I do not see anything about the controller board transfers on this LG phone. I doubt that this will be the issue here. I would measure the voltage on the battery connector when you connect the charger to the phone. You will have to see the proper voltage on the conector. If nothing else, you could always try to replace the charging board. PITA to do too.

@oldturkey03 With the original battery that the phone came with, nothing happens when I plug in the charger, no vibrate or anything. Replacing the charging board would be quite easy in my case since I haven't closed up the phone yet. Although broken charging port wouldn't really affect the wireless charging right?

by

@ofheartsking since there are no schematics available it is hard to say how the charging board fits into the while charging circuitry. I am certain that somehow all of those separate components "talk" to each other and could affect each others performance. I would replace it if the cost is not to high and for practice purpose.
