Apple's October 2020 refresh of its iPad Air tablet, sporting an A14 Bionic processor, a 10.9" screen, a new design, and in-button TouchID.

Display Issue After Replacement: Only Backlight Visible

Hello everyone,

I recently replaced the display on my iPad Air 4 and encountered an issue where only the backlight of the screen is visible. Despite the touch functionality seeming to work fine (I can hear the device respond to touch inputs), there are no icons, colors, or any visual output on the display itself, just the glowing backlight.

Here's a rundown of the situation:

  • I have used 2 replacement screens from iFixit for this repair, the same issue occurred with both screens.
  • I ensured that all connectors were properly seated during each display assembly attempt.
  • I checked for any visible damage to the connectors or the ribbon cables.
  • I attempted a hard reset to rule out a software-related issue.

Despite these efforts, the screen continues to show only the backlight without any actual display content.

Has anyone here experienced something similar or have any suggestions on what might be causing this and how to fix it or if there's a specific aspect I should be paying attention to?

Thank you in advance for your insights and advice!

I've had this happen on some repairs in the past. In my experience, I caused a static shock to the board that blew out the backlight IC chip and required microsoldering to repair. It usually happens due to the battery not being disconnected while attempting to plug in the screen. You will see the image on the screen but very dim and you will hear all the noises coming from it, but difficult to see the image.

Diagnostic Steps

  • Test with known good parts
  • Test with the original screen
  • If still no backlight, do a visual inspection of the board.
  • Look for blown diodes (likely will be cracked)

How to Fix

  • Replace Backlight Diodes (if blown)
  • Replace Backlight Fuses (if blown) that are next to the FPC connector.

Matt, it appears to me the poster has the opposite problem from what you're describing. Rather than having a picture and no backlight, they seem to have a backlight and no picture.
