Why is my Wifi driver not operating?

My laptop is unable to discover open networks and the driver is not running. I tried EC reset and also reinstalling the intel driver, but nothing worked. Before, after multiple resets, the wifi would connect. But now, it is completely gone.

There are no msi service centres nearby and I am unable to work on my laptop.

@sundusharoon what version windows are you using and does your WiFi still show up in Devices? Do you have a RJ-45 USB adapter to check if you can use a wired connection? Any issues with any of your USB ports or with teh Bluetooth connections?

by

I am using Windows 10 and I cannot see WiFi. I can only see the option of airplane mode.

The USB ports work fine.

The driver Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz shows an error. It says “This device cannot start (Code 10). Operation failed. The requested operation was unsuccessful”

i came across a post asking to ping 127.0.0.1 to ensure the wi-fi card is not faulty. I tried it and the packets are being sent and received.

I dont know what the issue is.

I have an RJ-45 USB adapter. It came along with the laptop.

I have added images for more clarity on the issue. Would really appreciate some help.

I had contacted MSI and they said it is a hardware issue. I need to send my laptop all the way to the USA and the diagnosis will cost around $70. They shared with me this link: https://www.msi.com/faq/notebook-3518

The steps seemed to work for 5-6 hrs and then I had to repeat then again. However, it is not working anymore

Yes, I tried network reset as well as system restore. I get the same error.

It may be a faulty WiFi card but since a wired connection also doesn't work (is this correct?) it may not be hardware, unless the WiFi card is interfering with the network protocols somehow.

If it is a faulty card then looking at this teardown video it wouldn't be easy to get to it.

Have you checked if the latest BIOS version is installed?

Try running a "live" version of a lite Linux OS from a USB drive and check if the WiFi works OK.

You don't have to install it, just run it.

If it works OK with Linux it's not hardware but a compatibility issue between Windows OS and the laptop, if it doesn't work then it's hardware.

Hello,

Thank you for you response and time.

What about pinging to check whether the card is faulty? It did respond, should that still mean the Wi-Fi card needs replacement?

Yes, I checked the BIOS version and tried all the suggestions provided on the web. I will try Linux OS and update you. Please stay active, I need to get this fixed before exams 😅

@sundusharoon

Pinging 127.0.0.1 does not test the WiFi card.

It is a loopback test

You are testing a virtual interface to make sure that the network configuration is OK.

If you could, you could remove the WiFi card and this test would still work

by

Oh okay, I see. Thank you for explaining. I will try out Linux once I get it installed into a USB drive.

by

@sundusharoon I concur with my colleague. Knowing about the reliability issues with the AX201 I too would suggest that this is a card issue and will need to be replaced.

In the video shared by jayeff, replacing the Wi-Fi card looks pretty complicated. Can I still it do it myself? Which card will I have to purchase?

Select the network adapter, press and hold (or right-click), then select Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software, and then follow the instructions

Yes, already tried this solution. The latest driver is installed and the driver keeps showing an error. It was working before (3 weeks back) but nothing works now.
