A digital TV converter box by Apex Digital.

Weird thing happening with my converter box.

Hello,

I recently dug out my Apex converter box so I could watch TV from my Toshiba CRT television. I plugged it in, and pressed the power button, and it flashed red. Nothing showed up on screen. I held the button, and it continued flashing. That happened for a bit, until it turned green. The remote did the same. I saw a few white lines on-screen, and then nothing. I also heard some buzzing sounds when I pressed the button. I unplugged it and the high-pitched noise faded out along with the red light. The issue's very hard to describe in words. Is there any way to fix this, or is my converter broken?

Hi @lappy48614311,

High pitched whine and noises could indicate problems with the power supply board in the converter

Disconnect the power to the converter box and open it up and check the condition of the capacitors on the power board to make sure that they're not leaky etc

Post some close up images of the board in your question Adding images to an existing question

@jayeff LOL, with the final answer being posted below, it appears you called it! Blown capacitor indeed.

Update: I recently opened it up and found that a capacitor decided to explode. I am terrible at soldering and do not want to risk hurting myself again, but I concluded that the unit had been damaged beyond repair. Luckily, I was able to purchase another converter from Apex and I was able to get television on my CRT!
