@edsolomon first you need this T540p Hardware Maintenance Manual. Then go to page 62. It is here where you find how to replace the HDD. Now, here is the fun part. We do not know if you have a HDD or SSD. So, you will have to tell us. After that, you will have to reinstall your OS. The exact steps are depending on your OS. You you can either do a Google search on how to do that (for Windows, Microsoft is the place to find that info) or you can let us know which OS you have and somebody here can most likely help you with that.

Hi @edsolomon,

If you are updating the drive with an SSD then a lot reputable SSD suppliers also supply free "cloning" software with the SSD drive (Cloning software URL download link and password supplied with the part).

You can use this to "clone" your existing drive (see YouTube for how to clone a laptop HDD (or SSD), so that you can make it a seamless upgrade i.e. clone existing HDD/SSD to replacement SSD, use hardware manual to remove/replace the existing HDD/SSD with cloned replacement, start the laptop as per normal before this was all done.

Note: Cloning is not the same as copying as copying doesn't copy all the necessary files (boot partition etc) from the original drive to the replacement drive. Cloning is as implied, it is an exact replica of everything on the original.
