“5” Key is not working.

Hey guys!

So, the 5 key on my Mac randomly stopped working. I know this key is probably not as significant as the space bar, for example, but I still would like to fix it.

Here’s what I know: the key does nothing when I press it, and it will randomly type the 5 on its own. For example if I turn on Spotlight, it will type 5 many, many times on its own. Yet, when I hit the 5 key on the keyboard, it does nothing.

I have tried the basic steps, like reseating the ribbon cable, resetting NVRAM and SMC, rebooting the Mac and so on. Do you have any suggestions before I simply replace the keyboard?

Hi @jadonlyon

Sounds like the ribbon cable, or connector is bad.

I can say for sure. it is not fun when that happens.

I sent mine to rossmann repair group to be inspected, They replaced the connector.

I find it likely you have the same issue.

@beanman56 - Unfortunately I am not in a position to send my Mac in for repair, but now I have better idea on where to check. Thanks for the help!

@jadonlyon - I would have a good repair shop test with a new keyboard.

So you're not out $20 if it's something else.
