@sallycinnamon could be an issue with teh sound amplifier on your main board or the speakers. You also want to check if it does that with every source input. You need to check if the volume behaves like this on other source like DVD/BR player, Game console etc, as well
. Let us know what the sound quality is like as well as what exact model your Sanyo is. Just going by your description it might need either the board or a speaker replacement
