Why does water leak when I remove water filter?

I have searched high and low and can't find information about why my fridge leaks water when I remove the filter. I used to remove the filter to replace it, and there were no issues. Lately, the water dispenser has stopped working, and when I remove the filter to check things water starts spewing out. It does not leak when a filter is in place. I tried replacing the filter with the same results: dispenser not working and water spews everywhere when I remove the filter. What is the issue?? Please help!
