@michaelngona first we need to know if your phone is really overheating or if it just displays a message that it is overheating. We also need to know if anything happened prior to this. Let us know if there was a chance of water immersion, if it got dropped etc. If it is overheating, the most common issues are with the battery or the charging port/charging board.

If it is not, but it tells you that it is, the issue is most often generated by a failed thermal sensor on either the battery, charging board and worst case scenario, on the main board. I would definitely consider replacing the battery and the charging board.

Since iFixit does not yet have a guide for this, use something like this video to work on your phone.

While you work on your phone, take lots of pictures. Once you are done with it, take those pictures and create a guide for iFixit. That will help the next person that has the same problem as you do.
