I cant identify what model is my mac, or what is wrong with it

so, the situation is, long time ago i bought a mac, it was listed as 2015 version, also visually it got same big screen and same ports as 2015.

the guy who i bought mac from said that this particular on has burned gpu, beside it its work perfectly great, i didnt knew anything he said, i just bought it cuz i tought that its a great deal.

now time had passed and im planning to change the whole motherboard with all components, to finally get the experience i was looking for, beside it i come up with this problem, if you check the Mid 2015 15" mac specs it got Intel iris ghaphics card, and 16gb of ram, but mine got something strange,

8gbs of ram and Intel HD Graphics 4000, also check out

Block Image

this image, all the specs are shown here, the system report says that its MacbookPro10,1 but at the same time "About this mac" shows that it is 2015 mac

i really dont understand whats up so maybe you'll know?

check this 2015 mac site with specs: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) - Technical Specifications (apple.com)

and also this 2012: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2012) - Technical Specifications (apple.com)

@rikkopaw just out of curiosity, have you checked the 820-XXXXX numbers on these logicboards? 820-00138 would be a 2015 and 820-3332 a 2012

It's a bit confusing for sure! Apple offered the 15" model in two different versions IG & DG (from Late 2013 onwards)

  • IG - Integrated Graphics (Intel Graphics)
  • DG - Discrete Graphics (AMD or NVIDIA chip)

Your system by its Model ID is within this group of systems: MacBook Pro10,1 and this is your exact system: 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro 2.3GHz Core i7.

This system has a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M discrete graphics chip. The 'About this Mac' won't show the Discrete Graphics chip until it is active! Only showing you the active Integrated Graphics. Within the Hardware System Report it will show you the dual graphics when you click the Graphics/Display section then you'll see both!

Sadly the seller either didn't know the systems real age (year) or wanted to get a few more dollars out of you. I have the older 2012 unibody system which I still use for quite a lot of stuff so don't think this is a slouch of a system it will serve you well for Web surfing, video watching and writing.

As far as upgrading, only the storage is an option which is a custom blade SSD drive. Replacing the logic board is a bit iffy! Your system is only an 8GB of RAM you could try to locate a 16GB board (RAM is soldered in this series) and trying to fit a newer version is not possible as the display interface is different and the mount points.

Yeah, so the thing is, ive been (sory for this jargon) f*king with this mac for like entire year, the seller wasnt fully sure what he was selling i guess, but he told me that i couldn't do any serious tasks on it.

On the bright side, i bought a normal mid 2015 15Inch DG logicboard with all the stuff yesterday, so im good, gonna replace it someway, (by myself or in a service center) also im kinda saved some money, cuz i bought mac for 800 GEL (Georgian currency) and the normal mid 2015 15inch mac goes for at least 1300-1500 GEL, (saved money but lost so much time and nerves dealing with it)

Beside the that the problem was solved by buying new logicboard, i was still confused why my mac is so strange in specs, thats why i asked this question.

now im wondering, Does all MacPro 15inch has the same logicboard but with the different specs?

@rikkopaw - Well... No. the outsides often look the same as Apple loved to have some consistances in the look. But the insides often changed and very radically! As an example your display panel is based on an older interface standard iDG and the 2015 display is based on eDG. While the physical connection on the logic board looks the same the pinouts are very different as the signals are different!

Think of it this way... I have a nice stereo which I use AC Zip cord wires as they offered the thicker gaged wires which work better for big speakers. But, this wire is the same as what many AC appliances use! So if one is not careful one cound wire up a speaker to the wall AC outlet without realizing it and Bang there goes your speaker in a puff of smoke!

There are a few other things that are different too! I would recommned you take the time to review these two guide sets:

> MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012 Repair

> MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015

Compare the parts as an example the displays, note the differences! like the camera connector is smaller in the 2012 Vs the 2015 while similar one will not fit into the other!

For sure but, how does it works? Like, 2015 display, and im fully sure its 2015 display, cuz it has no macbook pro writing on bottom, also the battery, battery is the same as 2015 model, im not fully sure, but if 2012 motherboard works fine with all 2015 components, then 2015 motherboard should work fine with all the other components, doesn't it right?

by

@danj so, what you gonna say, its not an 2015 macbook? its 2012 mac with messed up stats? but what about the serial number, can it be somehow changed?

also maybe the description mid 2015 mac is modified somehow programly?

im screwed up?

by

@danj so, i checked out, theres something scary is happening with this mac rn, i ckecked out all the info about 2012 and 2015 macs, and in a moment i felt heart broken cuz all the details were witnessing that its 2012 mac, BUT then i checked out official apple page and theres actually one almost invisible difference between mac 12 and mac 15 body:

the mac 2012 has two microphone holes on the right side of body.

mine hasnt any of them! its mac 2015!

so the worst thing that would i have to do is swap the display if it will needed

i felt really glad when i found out this detail, also still the problem that i ran in is strange but i hope everything will go perfectly
