How to identify iPhone 3GS logic board storage size?

I was given a destroyed 3GS but the logic board looks ok but I want to identify if it is a 16gb or 32gb logic board. Is there anyway to tell just by looking at it? I have identified that it cannot be an 8GB because on the bottom of the board there is a small "2009" and I know from research that the 8GB wasnt released until 2010, is that safe to say? Can sombody please help me with ideas oh how to tell. thanks!

The only way that I know off is by identifying the memory chip itself. Check the number on the Toshiba chip just below the ARM. Google it for the datasheet. The 16Gb is a TH58NVG702ELA89 made by Toshiba.

So how easy is it to remove the steel covers?

by

which steel covers? Follow this guide iPhone 3GS Teardown to step 11 and you will see your memory chip

by

Yes but in step 10 it shows you the board how it actually is in the phone, all the chips are covered by metal covers. Step 11 shows the board with them all removed.

I am sorry, I did not follow you. Yes, the metal shield will come of with a little prying.

I have noticed that the 8gb and the 16gb mainboards have a reversed type of ribbon cable connector than the 32gb main boards. Also the 32gb mainboards are usually blue unlike the 8gb or the 16gb. Hope this helps.
