iPod dead after battery drained

I left ipod on for 36 hours by mistake.

Still working when I found it, but turned off after 5 minutes with re-charge notice on screen.

Plugged it into ipod USB charger attached to plug (which I always do when laptop/PC not on), and it immediately went dead. Cannot be turned on at all and does not mount on ITunes.

Have turned hold switch on and off, and used reset technique (pushing menu and centre buttin for 10 secs) but no response.

Is this likely to be the cause of a completely expired battery?

Vikki, I definitely would start with the battery. Of course make sure your dock connector is clean, no bend or broken pins and that no corrosion is present. The guide is here Hope this helps, good luck.
