N3DSXL — A-Button requires significant pressure to input.

So, I’ve had my 3DS XL around for maybe five or six years, maybe more, maybe less. It’s never had any problems like this before, ever, but all of a sudden the A-button requires a lot more pressure to properly input anything, whereas the other three buttons work perfectly fine.

I’ve changed out the silicon bit between both the buttons and the motherboard, though that seemed to make things worse for a little bit, as that only led to the buttons feeling just a touch more clunky and unsurprisingly didn’t fix my issue. I’ve boiled it down to either I need to clean out the sticker between the motherboard and the buttons, or to replace the sticker entirely, which won’t be all too hard since they’re fifty cents at the very worst. As an FYI, I’ve done some heavy mashing on the A-button, which kind of came naturally and is obviously the source of the problem. I’d rather not try to have this happen once every few years until I decide I’m done with it entirely, though.

Any suggestions?

Good morning,

My guess is that as a result of excessive use & wear, the pad has worn down to the point it barely functions.

My suggestion is that you tear it down and confirm this as chances are you will have to replace the button pad assembly (the electronic side)

The pad as in the sticker, the motherboard or the rubber part?

Sticker. Open it up and just check to see if the pads on the sticker are worn. if not, then turn to the rubber and check. Most likely one of the two has excessive wear

The sticker, as far as I can tell, doesn’t seem all too worn out, but there’s a few black specks hanging out where the A-button is supposed to be. Is that a sign of wearing, or is it just some dust that managed to find its way in there?

Aha. Black specs. I'm going to have a guess and say small pieces of the sticker have started to come off. Weird that it requires significant pressure but still, i reckon that isn't factory. Clean it off and check

Took a while to get the motherboard and the sticker out, but I got a replacement and the buttons work just like new. Thanks!
