Can I take a hard drive from an iMac and boot from it on my MacBook Pro to use the iMac as a portable computer?

Can you explain your reason here a bit more.

Are you wanting to access the iMacs data from your MacBook Pro? Either locally or remotely.

Are you trying to setup your MacBookPro as a replacement of your iMac?

You don’t need to remove the drive from your iMac to attain that!
