Physically the stick is not resetting to the middle of the axis,

My PS5 stick, as the title states simply lays wherever my thumb leaves it, wondering what broke, it's new, and I haven't opened it in hopes PlayStation might repair it, but I'm not sure what i can do.

Is the L3/R3 input functional? Sometimes, the control stick cap is pulled up against the cutout, which might restrict movement a tad. Pressing the L3/R3 button in the usual manner brings it back into place. If that isn't the case, then it may actually be a faulty control stick module or a defect in the cap, in which case taking advantage of your warranty is not a bad idea.

input is functional

tried pressing down on the stick to no avail, it still just sits wherever my thumb leaves it on the axis for constant input

@fhbgm9t3eqself In this case, if your warranty is still valid or if it's still within the span of its return period, I'd suggest either exchanging the controller or have Sony repair it for you so you don't have to go through any unnecessary hassle or risk. If it comes down to it, it's likely the control stick module that will need to be replaced. Removal and replacement of this component are processes that require soldering.
