Why does my screen dim as soon as it opens?

As soon as screen opens, it is normally bright for about a second, then dims and stays dim. Brightness is set to maximum. Have been told problem is either an "inverter" (?) or my screen, which will be quite costly to fix. Will the screen eventually go black, or get darker and darker? Is it fixable? Mac repair shop said they couldn't test "inverter" (?) because they didn't have the part in stock and said they couldn't tell me the cause of the problem. Machine is a PowerPC G5.

Please give us the last three figures of your serial number so we can identify which machine you have and get you to the correct guides. Thanks

Marie, telling me that it a PowerPC G5 only partly tells me what the processor is. To help you I need that serial number.

Sounds like your inverter has failed. This is Apple part # 661-3781. I would first check your connections before replacing. Here's the part: http://www.ifixmaccomputers.com/imac-20i...

Her4e's a blow up of all your parts: http://www.welovemacs.com/apimg5220mpa.h...

There does not appear to be a guide for replacement of this part but this guide will get you into the machine: iMac G5 20" Model A1145 Logic board Replacement
