How do I calibrate the battery

How do I calibrate the battery?

I replaced the dead battery in my just out of the box HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-ec1073dx. The new battery holds a charge fine, but I keep getting messages from the HP Assistant V9, the newest version, that the battery needs to be calibrated.

I updated the UEFI BIOS and the Firmware BIOS that run at startup. Then I ran the "Long Battery Test and Calibration" which took 4 plus hours to complete just like the test description said.

At the end it gave me a message the test and calibration were successful. As soon as it rebooted, the HP Assistant still showed the message the battery needed to be calibrated.

I restarted the laptop and the UEFI gave me the same message when I ran the short test, about 2 minutes, that the battery needed to be calibrated.

I will be grateful any help I can get.

Hey there,

Thankfully the battery calibration isn't too different from how you would do it for a MacBook. A manual calibration entails charging it up fully, disconnecting the AC adapter, then allowing laptop run until the battery runs down completely. HP does have instructions here for their specific devices.

Hope this is helpful!

Hi Jacob,

I apologize for taking so long to respond. I am very grateful for your help.

I have read about the manual calibration you mentioned, "a manual calibration entails charging it up fully, disconnecting the AC adapter, then allowing laptop run until the battery runs down completely" in quite a few articles.

Many of them added "and charge it for an additional X hours", X being anywhere from 2 - 5 hours. I tried that method 4 or 5 times without success.

I didn't tap the hyperlink you included that went to an HP site until today. I had seen the suggestion to "uninstall Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" but forgot to bookmark it and couldn't find it again.

I'm going to try that next. I let you know if it works. Thank you again for your help!

Take care!
