First try doing a SMC reset

If you have access to a second system and a firewire cable you could startup you system in target mode to the other Mac so you can at least get to your important data on your systems hard drive.

If you can get an external hard drive thats at least equal in size to what your system has (will need to have two firewire ports on this HD) and a second firewire cable using the same idea as above add into the chain this hard drive and do a full copy of your system to it as a backup (just in case).

At that point you can redo your OS without any fear of loosing anything. Afterwards copy back your apps and data as needed.

When you say the progress bar 'ends' does this fail or finish? Did you notice if there was any updates done on the Mac before it was powered down?

After replacing a battery I always perform an SMC reset, this can be done by following the steps below.

A Macbook Pro with a battery you should not remove on your own

'' Shut down the computer.

Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.

On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.

Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.

Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.''

A Macbook Pro with a battery you can remove

''Shut down the computer.

Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.

Remove the battery.

Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.

Release the power button.

Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.

Press the power button to turn on the computer.''

If this fails then you may want to try to re-install your Operating System.

Hope this helps,

Wes
