iMac midi 2007 is working but the LCD is stained. Looks like humidity.
the Mac was unused for a while.
I thought that was it too. I took the glass off and cleaned it and nothing changed. I turned on my Mac without the glass and the smudges keep showing up all over the screen. as if it had moisture behind it.

Follow this guide iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Glass Panel Replacement as it’s likely the cover glass back side that needs a cleaning.
Well… that only leaves mold buildup on the defuser sheets or just a worn-out LCD as the liquid crystal material used in these older systems loose there ability to toggle effectively as the areas have a persistence issue as the background image was too static. The last possibility is this series used CCFLs instead of LEDs and they too over time and use wear out.
If you can find a good used display assembly I would just replace it, if not you may need to live with it.
While you can get to the sheets to clean, you may end up with a bigger mess as cleaning can leave streaks which become visible. The CCFL’s are getting hard to find as they hold Mercury vapor
Which why it’s just better to replace the assembly.
