SE2 truetone and front cam questions

1) does true-tone operation require that the front camera be connected?

2) can a malfunctioning front camera prevent a phone from booting?
in this case, the boot cycle stays locked at the apple logo, when the front cam is disconnected it boots fine.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi B C,

I can't speak authoritatively for the SE 2020, but I can tell you for sure that a bad camera on an iPhone 7 Plus can keep it from booting. I had to replace the camera assembly to get the phone to work again; same symptoms, it worked when the camera was unplugged and putting in a new camera fixed it.

I don't think the camera is required for True Tone, but the ambient light sensor probably is. Since they're on the same connector there's no way to tell which would be the cause of the problem.

Definitely time for a new camera. Fortunately it won't break anything on the SE 2020 to replace it, at least as far as I know.

Hi Jerry,

you are definitely correct the front cam flex being required. however, i think it is looking for the the matched camera ID because connected a different SE2020 front cam flex. it booted, but no truetone (the base screen was original). so at this point, i'm not sure that replacing the camera flex will fix the truetone problem. my JC V1SE can restore truetone to the LCD screen, but it doesn't have a board to reprogram the ID of the camera flex. :(

i think i've lost true tone on this phone, but i'll keep digging.

Thanks

According to fixez.com, the front camera assembly consists of the following components.

Includes the 7 MP facetime HD front-facing camera and microphone.

Also contains the ambient light sensor and proximity sensor.

We know that the ALS and proximity sensors are paired on phones with Face ID, so it's entirely feasible that they could have paired either one or both on the SE, but why? There's no security issue here so it's no more necessary than it is to pair a battery.
