Washing machine stops mid-cycle, resumes after some time

Hello everyone, I've been experiencing this strange issue with my Samsung washing machine. Here's a summary. Whenever I start it, everything seems fine, the water is being pumped in and out, the drum spins in both directions and spin cycle works well. But, after some time, it just cuts off. It just stops emitting any signs of life. Unplugging it and plugging it back in doesn't do the trick either and it seems like an electrical fault. But after some time, usually half an hour to an hour, it just randomly springs back to life and continues where it left off and everything seems perfect again. Any idea on what could be the cause of this behavior? I doubt the lid switch or water inlet valve are causing this because those problems would persist even when the washer is working.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @nikolazivanovic

What is the model number of the washer?

When you say "It just stops emitting any signs of life.", do you mean that there's no indication of power at all i.e. no lights etc?

by

1) The model number is WW70J3473KW1EN.

2) Yes, exactly, no lights, no sounds, nothing. When it springs back to life it's business as usual. My wild guess is that it could be a faulty capacitor somewhere, so the washing machine starts working when it gets drained.

I can't find a service manual for the model but from your description it does seem like a power supply problem, maybe not as simple as just a capacitor though.

With a lot of model nowadays the AC input is converted on the main board to a lower DC voltage so that the electronics can operate OK.

Best first option would be to inspect the mainboard for any obvious component damage or even corrosion

Have you ran an extension cable to another outlet. This happened with my washer although I don't have a Samsung but LG.

Yep, I was even certain that we had malfunctioning electricity in the house, but the electrician came and found no such issues.

If your washing machine stops mid-cycle and then resumes after some time, it could be due to a few different reasons. Here are a few common possibilities:

  1. Power fluctuations: Fluctuations in the power supply can cause the washing machine to stop temporarily. If this is the case, the machine will resume once the power stabilizes. Check if there are any other electrical devices causing power surges or if there are any issues with the electrical circuit.
  2. Overloading: If you've overloaded the washing machine with too many clothes, it can strain the motor and cause it to overheat. As a safety measure, the machine may automatically stop until it cools down. To prevent this, try reducing the load size and see if the problem persists.
  3. Unbalanced load: An unbalanced load can cause the washing machine to pause during the cycle. It's possible that the machine is attempting to redistribute the load to achieve better balance. This often happens when heavier items, like towels or jeans, are on one side of the drum. Try rearranging the clothes to distribute the weight more evenly.
  4. Faulty motor or control board: There may be an issue with the motor or the control board of the washing machine. A malfunctioning motor or control board can cause the machine to stop intermittently. In such cases, it's advisable to contact a professional technician to diagnose and repair the problem.

If the issue persists or you're unsure about the cause, it's always best to consult the manufacturer's manual or contact their customer support for further guidance. They can provide specific troubleshooting steps or recommend a service technician if needed.
