Red ring flashing on xbox original

can a bad motherboard display the red (flashing) and green lights upon starting the unit? or can a bad (CD/DVD) player do this or finally can the HDD make it flash these colors?

on the HDD there is a number of steps to reboot it, is there a web site which shows the step-by-step procedures for doing this?
