Do I have to replace the display entirely if backlight is not working?

I had my laptop in my bag and unknowingly, a bit of rain got into the vents. Now the display is not working properly as I don't see anything, mostly. Only if I direct a flashlight on the display, I can still faintly see my user name and my user icon.

So I guess this is a backlight issue? Is the busted the backlight fixable? If so, what can I do?

If not fixable, then that means I have to replace the whole display which will be expensive. :( Thanks.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Using a flashlight pressed on the display at a sharp angle do you see the faint image of your desktop and its icons?

If you do it’s likely the logic board backlight power logic and/or it’s connection to the display is the issue.

Yup, I saw the desktop icon and my name. So there is hope? Is it just a matter of cleaning the connector of any corrosion and/or replacing a backlight chip?

@patsaquino - Well… it could be a bit of corrosion, it could be something other than the Texas Instruments LP8548B1 Backlight LED Driver.

You’ll need to do a bit of circuit diagnostics using a multi-meter.

Much appreciated, @danj!

Just an update. I brought my laptop to a repairer who would not accept the repair saying that the the fix would involve changing chips that concerns the backlight inside the LED display itself. Is this true? Thanks.

@patsaquino - The 2021 first Gen M series systems have a traditional backlight system which has been used for years. The newest M2 systems use a local dimming zone approach which is a much more elaborate backlight.

The issue here is the power source of the backlight and the connection from the logic board to the display. There is a fuse as well as the Backlight LED Driver chip when a system gets wet can short out and it’s also possible corrosion has also effected things. These are located on the main logic board.

The area I would focus on is the main logic board as that is where the power comes from tracing its pathway. There are no chips within the display, only the ribbon cable delivering the power to the backlight it’s self.
