You will probably have to replace the backup battery. Unfortunately, I can't find any information on where the backup battery is stored.

Hi Lulu,

According to the Camera User Guide, there is indeed a dedicated date/time battery, aka the backup battery. Here's what it had to say.

  • The camera has a built-in date/time battery (backup battery). Date/time settings can be retained for about 3 weeks after the battery pack is removed.
  • The date/time battery will be charged in about 4 hours once you insert a charged battery pack, even if power to the camera is turned off.
  • Once the date/time battery is depleted, the [Date/Time] screen will be displayed when you turn the camera on. Set the correct date and time as described in "Setting the Date and Time" (pg 20).

No luck finding any actual information on where that battery is located, what type of battery it is, or how to replace it. One repair site that has "advisors" available pointed out a couple of sites (one of them being iFixit) showing the replacement procedure for that battery on other models of Canon cameras. No idea if they'll help, but here they are.
