The other day I noticed that my laptop was unusually hot while it was closed and asleep. When I opened it the screen was all weird and inverted but after I left it for a few days and restarted, it now looks like the photos- a white faded centre, with an unaffected display around the sides. External monitor works fine. And I haven’t damaged the laptop in any way.

Ouch! Your display defuser sheets have curled! The center section is the outline of the back Apple logo pad.
It’s a lot of work opening the display to get to the sheets and you would need to find them. Here’s a deeper view so you can see things MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown
Sadly, it’s just easier replacing the display or you’ll need to start using an external display.

It seems like there may be some burn in on the center of the display. First, try resetting the PRAM and the SMC using these instructions. If that doesn't help, try logging in and opening a video or graphics test (such as this WebGL sample) and leave it playing for about an hour at around 80% display brightness. If neither of those two things help out, it seems likely that the display has been damaged from the burn in and may need to be replaced.

Thanks so much for your replies! It's a bit of an old laptop now so I don't think I'll spend that much on it to do the repair, but it is super helpful to know what's causing the problem. Interestingly now that I've left it switched off for a few days, the problem seems to have gone down significantly - it's still visible, but less than before.
