Phone back bulging and clicking noise

I often use my Asus Zenfone max pro M1 smartphone while its plugged in to charger. Nothing problem happened before until few days ago I noticed a small fuzzy blue spot in my screen. I couldn't figure out what it is. Then later i found my backside thumbprint scanner dent feeling a little deeper than expected. I checked out and found one side of my smartphone back panel(metal) is slightly bulging out. Also whenever my phone gets a little hot like while playing games I smell a very faint bad smell from the phone. I placed my ear near the back of phone and heard a very faint click click click noise from inside. What is happening to my phone plz answer?

Hi Adarsh,

The symptoms you describe seem to point quite definitively at a swollen battery. As lithium ion batteries age, the chemical reaction responsible for charging and discharging starts to break down and as a result it can generate gasses which causes the plastic coating on the battery to swell up. Since it's right behind the screen, it will frequently press on the display and can easily cause artifacts like the blue fuzzy spot you're seeing.

So it sounds like you need to replace your battery. If you open up the rear case you will be able to see the battery directly and verify if it's indeed swollen. If so, it'll look and feel pillowy rather than solid and brick-like. If that's the case, then there's no question your battery has gone bad and you need a new one.

Sorry to say iFixit doesn't have a guide to replacing the battery in your phone, but I did locate a YouTube video that steps you through the process. The good news is on your phone it's fairly easy, especially when compared to some other phones.

The batteries themselves are readily available; you'll need to do an internet search to find one that's available to you. Here's an example for sale on Amazon.

Good luck; let us know how it goes!

Thankyou Jerry. I also did some searches on Google the previous day and found same problem description as mentioned by yours. I too found the same YouTube video. I don't have the necessary tools to open the phone so I had to use things which I had. I opened the back cover and inspected the battery. Although it is still smelling but i didn't find any significant swollen of the battery. Also after opening the cover I guess the pressure on the screen seemed to release because as soon i did the blue spot vanished. But I wont take any chance, I will replace the battery asap.

@adarshmohanty That is curious; smell is somewhat unusual for batteries, so I have to wonder if perhaps it swelled enough to pop the sealed envelope covering the battery. If that happened the swelling would then go down but the smell would be present from the escaping gasses. Not something that's common, but also not unheard of.

Maybe thats what happened. Never encountered this type of thing ever in any of my other electronic devices with batteries before.

I think I might know why this happened so randomly. Few days ago I happened to be playing a game in phone which barely supports its minimum requirements to run. But I ran it with the highest settings and continued playing while it was plugged in for quite long time which made my phone very hot. With my thick phone case not allowing to ventilate the heat I guess it overheated the battery.
