There are 2 ways around this: You can use the HP UPD to work around the problem, but the rub is these 1010 series printers are so lackluster on RAM (this is made worse by the fact they use modified PCL, which is NOT AN ISSUE on bigger machines with the RAM to support it) it will occasionally throw a PCL personality error out at you. PostScript MAY be more reliable, but I never tested it at the time. You fix it by turning the printer off once it occurs and turning it back on. For this model, you need the PostScript driver. HP pulled the PCL5/5e driver.

You will need to follow the USB instructions for this model: OBSOLETE - (Windows) Installing a HP LaserJet Printer using the HP UPD

THIS IS A DOT4 ERA HP, NOT USB_001 LIKE THE M401n I DEMOED WITH IT. Keep this in mind when you choose a protocol. You also cannot use the Windows Settings control panel, you have to use the legacy control panel (search in the start menu for "control panel", and select printers and devices). I may need to redo this guide and obsolete the 7/8.x era guide, a lot changed. For new readers, I added an interim note to account for this oversight :/. It's a low-view guide that I neglected due to lack of use.

The other driver you may need is on the HP UPD website: There's now a DOT4 communication driver which may be required for these newer computers, in addition to the UPD. I would try this first, and then move to the UPD.
