Hi Sue,

Here's the Toshiba manual for your VCR.

TOSHIBA M-683 OWNER'S MANUAL Pdf Download

The manual doesn't mention any buttons specifically labelled "Mode", but there are a couple of different references to the word "mode", such as setting it to either TV or VCR mode. What is it you're trying to accomplish with the "Mode" button that you're looking for?

I have the owner's manual. What I need is the service/repair manual. Not looking for anything labeled mode. Just trying to find out where the mode switch is located so that I can clean it.

Sue, maybe you can explain what the mode switch you're looking for does, because I don't understand what you're looking for and maybe that would help.

The mode switch tells the VCR to play, Fast Forward, Rewind, or Stop. I have heard that this is sometimes the cause for a tape not playing or stopping a few seconds after you put it in. It also eats the tape a little before it comes out. I've heard that the mode switch may need to be cleaned but I can't find it.

Chances are if you wish to change from vcr to tv viewing, that it will be a software switch i.e. electronic IC component being turned off or on and not a mechanical hardware switch, i.e. upon receipt of the signal from the remote control's TV/VCR button or the non locking TV/VCR button on the front panel of the player the control unit will change the mode from the vcr as the signal source to the antenna as the signal source.

Have you checked if the TV/VCR button on the control panel works in case it is a faulty button on the remote control?

If you meant to change how something else works then again it most probably is done by operating software switches and not hardware switches or relays etc

Here's the service manual but you have to purchase it if you want it.

I was hoping to get help without having to spend money. Haven't used the remote. Not trying to change what the VCR is doing. I have observed what it is doing when I insert a tape. I had to replace the O ring or whatever it is called, but I wanted to also clean the mode switch (inside of the machine) before I put it back together just incase that may have been the cause of the problem instead of the O ring.

Toshiba is notorious for not releasing service information for their devices (same as Apple) so good luck in finding a free service manual

I seriously thought about making the purchase the other day from ServiceManual.Net, but I don't really feel the VCR is worth it. I was hoping to find someone that could tell me where it was. Just thought I would try and fix it before I throw it out. I'm pretty sure I could get one at Goodwill for like $10. Oh well, I tried. Thanks so much for your help though!
