Chosen Solution

Examine your cigarette lighter. The hot end that glows is a one piece coiled heating element. It should not show damage, a physical break in the coil. 12v current is drawn with several amps thru this coil to create heat until it glows red hot, then ejected to inform you that the lighter is ready. If the element is broken, replace it. If it's not broken, measure the voltage between the center pin and side of the socket to ensure 12v is available. Some vehicles shut off power, requiring the ignition switch turned on. Other vehicles leave the lighter hot at all times.
