Why does the light go off on my macine when I start brewing a shot

when I start brewing a shot the light goes off, if I wait 10-15 saconds it comes back on. Do I need to wait everytime the light goes off to continue pulling a shot, or can I continue with the light off? or is this the way it is supposed to work

I'm told the temperature is still pretty close to correct and it just means the heater has kicked in, and the water will continue to be hot.

Still, my unit's ready light turns off half-way through drawing shots too. It's about 25 years old and I don't remember that being a thing.

As a follow up, did you try descaling? That's the most popular answer.

Someone asked if I made sure the portafilter had hot water run through it before starting, and if I quickly added the espresso and returned the filter to the machine while it was still hot.

Doing this, I found that my unit kept at ready almost 50% longer.
