Screen distortion problem - broken image

I came across one old and rare laptop but it has a screen problem. Now, I don't own this yet, but wanted to hear for opinions of what the issue could be and is it fixable.

With external screen, it works normally, so should not be a GPU. This looks like flat cable but I am just guessing.

The model is IPC StarNote KII 333 MHz Model 98

Slobodan Maric that is a bad display. You will have to replace it to get full use of this laptop.

So it is a display panel itself, not a flat cable or some component that would be easy to replace?

@Slobodan Maric I have to agree with @ezzgen that this almost certainly looks like a failed LCD, but there is also the possibility it could be the flex cable that carries the LCD signals from the motherboard.

I'd open it up and check any flex cables that run from the motherboard to the display for damage or loose connectors first; if you have the screen on when you're wiggling the cable that could tell you if it's bad or not.

Anyway, as far as finding a replacement, I didn't have any more luck than you; there were a couple of places selling batteries but that was about it.

I've had some success in finding a replacement for other kinds of laptops by searching for the LCD itself rather than the computer it's in; very few computer manufacturers actually make their own LCDs, so if you can open up the display and look on the back of the LCD there will most likely be a model number somewhere on it - and possibly information on the manufacturer as well. Take that and do a search based on the LCD make and model and you might have better luck.

It does look like a failed display to me unfortunately, although I would recommend a re-install of windows first if you can, just to ensure it isn't a software issue.

It is not software issue, as picture is broken as soon as you turn it on. Not just in windows.

Any chance to find this display? I tried ebay but there is nothing even similar to this laptop

@Slobodan Maric Best shot would be disassembling the laptop enough to find the display's part number, if you're lucky it'll be a relatively common part used on several models!
