Recoding and flat battery

Hi All, I have a Ford mondeo Tdi, over the cold period, my battery went flat, asked a friend to help jump start it, which as now caused another problem, my car no longer recognises the keys, I’ve been told that it needs recoding (which costs a lot of money) I can’t afford to get this done, but even if I could the battery is stone dead, Do I need to got a new battery first then look at the recoding problem? Also I had the RAC out to it which was no help at all, said I need a new battery this was before it went totally flat as it’s been stood now for 4 weeks as I’m unsure what to do…

Can anyone please help and put me in the direction of the cheapest way to solve this

Thanks

Hi @alisongreen73

First you would need to replace the car battery as the car's electrics would need to have power so that the fob key can be paired to the car's security system.

Once you have replaced the battery etc try the following and check if the fob key connects with the car's security system and works.

  • Insert the ignition key into the ignition key lock and then turn the key to the II position, then turn it from II to I and back to II, 4 times within 3 seconds.
  • The passive anti theft system (PATS) light on the dash should turn on with a solid light. A tone may also sound but not sure if this applies to your model or not.
  • Next turn the ignition key to 0, then press the Unlock button on the key and keep it pressed until the PATS light on the dash starts to flash.
  • Finally turn the ignition key to the II position, then back to 0 to end.

Check if you can unlock the doors and start the engine OK with the key.

If it all works OK get the charging system checked just to make sure that the battery is being charged correctly when the engine is running.

You just have to buy a battery from the store and install it properly
