What is the model number of the laptop?
Try connecting an external monitor (TV - if there is a HDMI port on laptop) to the laptop and check if there is a display on it.
Alternatively, try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the laptop screen and check if you can see any images at all. They will be very faint if they are there so trying in a darkened room may help to see them.
If you can see images then there's a backlight problem with the display.
If you can't detect any images and if there's no external display either are you sure that the laptop is turning on and booting up into the OS i.e. HDD light flashing, fan working etc.
Has the laptop been dropped or gotten wet at all?
