Is the contact clip under the battery neccesary?

Long story short, I bought an iPhone to repair off of someone who tried to disassemble it and royally failed. They have also lost the black cover for the dock-logic board connector. Is that piece or the contact clip necessary for proper operation? Just curious before I blow $15 for them.
