Unfortunately, this is a common problem with the TI-83 Plus. Over time, the glue that holds the screen ribbon cable together starts to fail and causes screen artifacts like yours.

It will only get worse and requires soldering skills to fix. There's a repair topic on a calculator forum called Cemetech: https://www.cemetech.net/forum/viewtopic...

Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Motherboard & Screen Replacement

This is the guide for replacing Motherboard and LCD. in one go. however if you can solder you might be able to find a new display and solder it on.

no matter what, step one, would be opening the device to look for an obvious error like a loose connection.
and if the component is broken. look for an identifying number and find a replacement online.

Dead pixel lines, or dead pixel rows/columns, can be challenging to fix because they are often the result of a hardware issue rather than a software problem. Here is a good Pixel Calculator software that's working great and very helpful if you want to convert Pixels to Inches, Pixels to Megapixels and DPI to Pixels.

some steps you can try to address a dead pixel line on your screen:

1. Check Warranty: If your device is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer or the retailer where you purchased it. Dead pixel lines are usually considered a defect, and you may be eligible for a replacement or repair.

2. Pixel Fixing Software: Some pixel-fixing software tools may have options to deal with dead pixel lines, but the success rate is generally low for this issue. You can try running a pixel-fixing tool, but don't get your hopes up.

3. Gentle Pressure: In some cases, applying gentle pressure to the area with the dead pixel line may help. Use a soft cloth or a pixel-fixing tool and press lightly on the affected area. Be very careful not to apply too much pressure, as you could damage the screen further.

4. Stuck Pixel Methods: Sometimes, a dead pixel line is caused by a group of stuck pixels. You can try the methods mentioned in the previous response for stuck pixels, but be aware that the success rate for dead pixel lines is usually lower.

5. Professional Repair: If the dead pixel line remains and is bothersome, you might want to consider professional repair. A technician may be able to replace the faulty component causing the issue. However, this can be expensive, and it's important to weigh the cost against the value of the device.

6. Replacement: If your device is out of warranty and professional repair is costly, you may want to consider replacing the screen or the entire device if the dead pixel line is affecting your usage significantly.

Keep in mind that dead pixel lines are often a hardware problem related to the display itself. Software-based solutions are less likely to be effective for this issue. If it's a minor inconvenience and doesn't significantly impact your use of the device, you might choose to live with it. Otherwise, exploring warranty, professional repair, or replacement options is advisable.

1. True.

2. I'm not aware of any program for the TI-83 Plus that claims to fix pixels and dead lines

3 & 4. Do NOT apply pressure to the screen! It is fragile and pressing too hard will cause a permanent black spot to appear.

5. True, although I'm not aware of anyone that works on TI calculators. TI has made the screen extremely difficult to work on (and doesn't provide spare components).

6. Replacing the screen of a TI-83 is not feasible since replacement parts are not available and the screen ribbon cable is glued in place. TI has ensured that replacing the whole calculator is necessary.

The issue described is very common and the culprit is always the ribbon cable. TI has made the TI-83 Plus screen fragile and extremely difficult to repair.

@thelastmill Addressing screen issues on TI-83 Plus calculators is challenging due to their unique design. Unlike traditional screens, TI calculators don't typically suffer from dead pixels or pixel lines, and there are no known programs to fix such issues for these devices. Additionally, applying pressure to the screen is not advisable, as it can lead to permanent damage.

Repairing TI calculators, in general, is difficult because the manufacturer does not provide spare parts or support for individual component replacement. The screens of TI-83 calculators, including the TI-83 Plus, are particularly challenging to repair since the ribbon cable is often glued in place.

Given the limitations, replacing the screen on a TI-83 calculator is usually not feasible. When facing screen issues that significantly affect usability, replacing the entire calculator may be the most practical solution, as TI has designed their calculators in a way that makes individual component replacement and repair extremely difficult.
